She always says strawberries

Young strawberry plants running down a narrow timber bed in the afternoon sun, beside the cabbages and broad beans

Whenever I ask my wife what she'd love to see in the garden, the answer is nearly always the same: strawberries. So that's exactly what we did. A few weeks ago we went down to Mitre 10 and came home with strawberry plants, over thirty of them by the time we'd finished.

The thing I've come to realise is that with strawberries, the sun is everything. So I made sure they went into the sunniest spot I have, a narrow strip between the round posts out the back.

The same day, six raspberries went into the row just above them, behind the boxes with the cabbages and broad beans. I planted lettuces in between them to use the space while the canes get going. The snails found the lettuces almost straight away and have already had a couple of them, so that one's a fail.

A few weeks on they've all settled in, and one of the strawberries is already flowering, which seems like a good sign. Now it's just a matter of waiting. Here's hoping for lots of strawberries, and that we can keep the snails away from them.

Note to self

Sunniest spot you've got, then keep the snails off them.
