The Black Doris

Up in the branches of the Black Doris plum tree at the rental, picking, with dark ripe plums hanging all around

2015 was another good year at the rental. The beds kept producing: sugar snap peas that mostly got eaten standing next to the plant, radishes, lettuce, and strawberries. The girls were still on watering duty and still treated it as the best job going, which I was not about to correct.

The best thing on that section, though, was not something I planted. There was an old Black Doris plum out the back, and 2015 was the year it really went for it. Late January I was up in the branches picking. By the middle of February we were still at it, and we ended up with boxes of them, after everything we had already eaten.

That tree is the reason there is a plum in the ground here now. We loved it enough that when we finally bought our own place we wanted one, and it took us until this winter to get around to it. The Hawera that turned up in July, eleven years later, is us trying to get a bit of that back.

Note to self

A mature fruit tree you inherit with a place is worth more than it looks on the day you move in. Find out what is in the garden before you sign anything.
