Two weeks away, and all of it ready at once

Four picked cabbages lined up along a wet timber bench beside the house, beaded with water

We had a couple of weeks away with the family in the South Island, and when we got home today the first thing I did was go out to check on the cabbages and cauliflower. They hadn't waited for me. Every one of them was ready to pick, and the whole garden had disappeared under weeds.

The clean-up is going to take me the rest of the weekend. The cabbages went in back in July all on the same day, so of course they all came ready on the same day too. There's only so much cabbage one family can eat in a week, so a few of them went next door to the neighbour.

Next time they're not all going in at once. A few every couple of weeks, so they come ready a few at a time instead of all in one go.

A tight cabbage head in the bed, dew drops on its pale outer leaf A cauliflower head opening up among its leaves, just starting to go past its best Another cabbage hearting up in the bed, wrapped in its big blue green outer leaves
Note to self

Plant a few every couple of weeks, not the whole tray in one day.
